Say It Right

Hear the word. Count the syllables. Find the stress.

Syllable слог

A part of a word with one vowel sound. Clap as you say it: ba · na · na, three claps, three syllables.

Часть слова с одним гласным звуком. Хлопайте, произнося слово: ba · na · na — три хлопка, три слога.

Stress ударение

The syllable we say louder and longer: ba · NA · na. Every English word of two or more syllables has one.

Слог, который мы произносим громче и длиннее: ba · NA · na. В каждом английском слове из двух и более слогов есть одно ударение.

Playing as

On the teacher's laptop: 1–5 answers, space repeats the word, enter moves on.

How to play

Every turn is the same loop. The word appears and is spoken, someone answers, the answer opens up with the stress marked, you press Next word.

The three games

  • Count the syllables. The word appears whole, like student. Say how many syllables it has. The answer splits it into stu · dent.
  • Find the stress. The word is already split, like ex · pe · ri · ence. Choose the syllable said louder and longer. The big bubble and the o O o o pattern show the answer.
  • Tell the sounds apart. A sound appears, like /iː/ as in "tree". Choose which of the two words has it.

Three ways to run it

  1. Whole class. Everyone answers out loud together and you tap the key. Quickest, good for a warm-up.
  2. Two teams. The game shows whose turn it is and keeps both scores. One student answers, the others stay quiet.
  3. Pass it round. One student answers, says the word aloud, passes the laptop or tablet on.

Where the learning happens

When the answer opens, say the word together and clap on the stressed syllable. The score matters less than that moment. At the end of the round the game lists only the words the class got wrong, with the pattern beside each one, so drill that list before you play again.
